Seals & sea lions

Radka Prokopova I could sit here for hours and hours — such a beautiful place. Paid parking is available right by the beach, and there’s a freely accessible restroom.

Coast Guard Pier

Sunny Wu Great place to see sea lions up close. They stink though. Dont come here if you dont like hearing loud noises of "arrrr arrrr arrrr".

Pacific House Museum

Brian Weber The Pacific House Museum is a hidden gem that offers a fascinating glimpse into California’s history. The well preserved adobe structure transported me back to the early days of Monterey’s development. What I loved most about the museum was its well-curated exhibits, which showcase everything from the Native American cultures that first inhabited the region to Monterey’s role as California’s first capital. The displays are well organized, making it easy to follow the timeline of events and understand their significance.

Californias First Theatre

Mg 0 If only for its historic implications and significance, this adorable structure is worth viewing. You can look in through the windows and see the replica of a theatre bar and seating, and look at the outside and in the back garden, and get an idea of the size of the area’s population 150 years ago. I wonder what plays they performed !

The Great Tide Pool

Kennedy Rivera Went and most of the area was closed for the nesting birds (which is great!) so we went just to the side of it and had a great tidepooling trip!

Monterey Museum of Art

Anna A Great local art museum. It is not big, you can probably spend 1-1.5 hours here. They show 3-4 exhibitions at any given time. The permanent collection is big, but only some of it is on display usually as a part of some exhibit. The exhibits change every 3-4 months, so you can visit it every 3 months and see new art.

Point Pinos Lighthouse (1855)

Olga Lonska I had been looking forward to visiting Point Pinos Lighthouse for a while, and it did not disappoint! This historic lighthouse is a hidden gem with a rich history and beautiful coastal views. The entry fee is only $7 per person, which includes a tour of the lighthouse keeper’s quarters and fascinating insights into its past. The staff is knowledgeable and passionate about the history. Since the lighthouse has limited visiting days and hours, I recommend planning ahead. After the tour, you can take a short walk around the area and enjoy the stunning scenery. A must-visit for history and nature lovers!

Steinbeck Plaza

Nicholas Shake Steinbeck Plaza is right in the heart of historic Cannery Row in Monterey CA. This area is very lively. There is live music being played almost always and on days theres no live music, music still plays in the plaza. From the Plaza you can lookout over the Pacific Ocean and theres even coin operated telescopes so if you want to really look out there, you can. The Plaza has a huge fountain in the middle with statues of Steinbeck and other important people that were around back in the day. There is also beach access from the Steinbeck plaza and you can go right down to the beach and find seashells or get your feet wet. And if youre hungry, the Fish Hopper restaurant is always a wise choice.
