2 /5 Buck L: Im in my 40s. The way Id describe this church is like my parents church or maybe even my parents parents church. And not because its lacking any hipster coolness or relevance in that modern sense.
But its very much a studious, in-the-box Christianity from the 80-90s era. Things are sterile here. The worship is very technical (like get things right) but lacking heart and Spirit. I know, I know, its Presbyterian. But yeah, its very much that. Frozen chosen cringe.
But I think thats why those who attend, remain. There may be a bit of nostalgia from past-time or perhaps comfort. It just feels like something these Christians are used to. It makes sense since the leadership picked a new pastor that aligns with this. The sermon was lots of logos, bereft of ethos and pathos.
The redeeming part about this church, and I think why so many families are here, is that the childrens and youth program are the true heart and soul of the church. I have friends here where Gloria has taken the time to become inclusive. P. Joe is also very down to earth and relevant. The youth enjoy being around him.
This church is so out-of-place and out-of-time in 2023 post-covid, post-evangelical mileu. And no, I dont mean timeless.
From an ops standpoint, they also need more signs, more people to welcome and direct new people. It feels very much like a "you should just know" culture for people who already show up there. The kids check-in system also seemed to utilize outdated software which was confusing for those running it.
Overall faith is intellectualized here instead of embodied.
